Heading down the coast to the south is Sand Key. This is the perfect location for an extended stay in the area. The high-rise condos here most often have minimum stays of a month, with the exception of a couple of buildings that allow as few as two weeks. Although Sand Key has two hotel chains, it is more laid back without the bustling activities of its neighboring Clearwater Beach, just a short Jolly Trolley ride away. The next stop on your way south toward St. Pete Beach is Belleair Beach. This beach is all residential living and fairly restricted to only the residents of the area, however it is a nice part of the drive to see the beach mansions.
Indian Rocks Beach and Indian Shores is the next area that supports vacation rentals. Here you will find plenty of good restaurants and a few shops but expect to see more relaxed beach activities here. However, you can still get to Clearwater Beach for action with a short drive North. Most people who stay in Indian Rocks Beach are here to enjoy a relaxing, quiet beach vacation and just bask in the sun. For the folks who like to take long beach walks, this is the beach for you. From here you can walk five miles to the North or seven miles to the South without running out of sand.
Before you get to Madeira Beach, there is Redington Shores, North Redington Beach and Redington Beach. All three beaches are very similar and have a good mix of residential and vacation rentals. Being a laid back beach community like Indian Rocks Beach, it offers a more relaxing setting for your beach vacation. This again is the place you are going to want to go if you are looking for a nice quiet beach for sun-seeking and beach walks. From here, head south to Madeira Beach and Treasure Island to whet your appetite for more dynamic beach activities.
We arrive at Madeira Beach as our next stop on our way down the Central Gulf Coast. Madeira Beach is a great place to stay on a tighter budget. Here we have more high-rise condos that allow weekly rentals. Similar to Clearwater Beach, it has a lot of beach vacation activity with shopping, boat tours and restaurants. The tourist destination of John's Pass provides the access to the southern beaches of Treasure Island and St. Pete Beach.
Miles of clean, wide white sand beaches make Treasure Island the perfect Florida family destination. The warm gentle waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the very best sunsets in the world await you when you visit to Treasure Island. Treasure Island is home to upscale restaurants like Middle Grounds Grill and The Pearl. For family dinning you can chose from Foxy’s Restaurant, The Floridian or Gigi’s Italian Restaurant. The most popular eating and drinking establishments include Wahoo’s on the Island Bar and Grill, VIP Mexican Restaurant and Lounge and Ricky T’s Bar and Grill. Treasure Island is also home to Gator’s on the Pass, the Longest Waterfront Bar in the World, and the Fun Center, the largest arcade in Pinellas County with over 200 games and great prizes. Treasure Island is south of Madeira Beach after crossing the Johns Pass bridge and north of St. Pete Beach.
St. Pete Beach is a barrier island community stretched out along 4.5 miles of sandy beaches. On the southern tip of St. Pete beach lies Pass-a-Grille, a charming historical district with a flavor that is reminiscent of an Old Florida artists’ colony. This idyllic, unspoiled community started as a fishing village and was inhabited long before the rest of the island. Today, its galleries and restaurants and shorelines draw tourists from all over the world. Just walk down St. Pete Beach and you’ll have no problem finding something to do on the water like wave-runner rentals, scuba diving, fishing & parasailing. Or, take the Shell Key Shuttle catamaran to Shell Island for what else? Shelling! For historical buffs, try a trip to Egmont Key’s 440 acres of secluded beaches and the 150-year old lighthouse and gun batteries built in 1898 to defend Tampa during the Civil War. A more accessible historic and secluded beach area can be found at Fort Desoto, a 900-acre Pinellas County Park located in the Southwest corner of Mullet Key. St. Pete Beach is the far south end of the stretch of barrier islands of the the Central Gulf Coast Beaches just south of Treasure Island.
